Do you have faith in justice, or find justice in faith? [S]

The first light of dawn came with the crackle of a charcoal in the incense tin. Catherine knelt before the altar, her eyes closed, the world shut out from her thoughts. Every breath she took drew her deeper and deeper into her prayers. She could almost see the vastness of the cosmos in her minds eye, or perhaps it was the edges of her own belief? Where did her belief in the gods end and her worship of the law begin? Where was the separation? She clenched her eyes shut, gripping her fingers together in a desperate attempt to remain focused on what she was truly praying for. Guidance. Direction. She needed a new task, a new mission. She'd spent so long in the chapel seeing to the common needs of men that she'd begun to wonder if her time as an inquisitor had come to an end.

No inspiration came though, no words whispered into her mind, no thoughts breaching the evervast veil between the gods and men. Instead she felt only the cold resolve she always felt when her prayers ended. She got to her feet and drew herself to her full height, powerful muscles tensing beneath her dark skin. She turned away from the altar and began to dress. First the robes of a priestess, ordained by the church and charged with the wellbeing of the people. Then the armor she'd been given as an Enforcer, gleaming grey-silver even in the creeping sunlight of day. Finally, the prayer shawl that had been given to her by the priest who had ordained her 'inquisitor' on the day of her acceptance into the enforcers. Not a formal or even legal title, but one that had gained her enough reputation to be remembered by a few.

That was all that mattered.

Catherine made her way out of the humble room she had been staying in and down to the main part of the chapel. From there she made her way into the street and out into the world. Another quiet day, citizens greeted her with bright enthusiasm and grim distaste. There was no real separation between the two. That was okay with her, she lived in a world of extremes. Catherine made her way to the main barracks of the Enforcers. She'd negotiate for a patrol today, get her mind off of - who? She stopped when he approached, he was pale and thin and despite his ragged clothing appeared to be well manicured and taken care of. Odd. She frowned when he strode to her directly, extending an envelope. A few of her peers strode by and she shot them even looks before glancing back down at the paper.

"For me then," She murmured, expecting another reprimand for something done within legal boundaries. She paused when she read even the first line, glancing up at the boy and back down. Not in trouble... it was a mission. She read the details and felt a flare rise up her spine. Vagrants betray the City they'd sworn to protect. Her frown intensified until she managed to pull herself out of the brief bout of rage that threatened to overtake her. She looked the boy over again;
